Layering with Fleece: What is in a Weight?

Fleece has several unique properties that make it ideal worn on its own or as a layering piece. Compared to cotton or wool, fleece dries quicker, provides greater warmth at less weight, and is very breathable.

The North Face offers fleece garments in a range of weights, allowing you to select the piece that is right for both your activity level and the weather conditions you are in. To make it easier for you to layer our fleece garments, The North Face has developed a zip-in system where our outerwear jackets have a separate zipper inside, letting you join your outer jacket and fleece.

Below is an outline of the different types of fleece that The North Face offers to guide you in selecting the weight that is right for your outdoor adventures.

Our lightest fabric can be worn alone to take the chill out of a fall hike or as a mid-layer in any season.

This medium-weight fabric offers warmth in a range of conditions, making these garments very popular for layering or wearing alone in cooler weather.

Our most popular fabric, Polartec® 300 Series fabric offers exceptional warmth. It can be worn alone in cooler conditions or zipped into our shell jackets in extreme cold.
