30 MAY 2008 - The North FaceŽ Athlete, Simone Moro, To Lecture at the International Week of the Mountain in Cercedilla, Spain
The North FaceŽ today announced that sponsored mountaineer Simone Moro has been invited to hold a lecture at the International Week of the Mountain in Cerdedilla (Spain), on Saturday, 14 June 2008.
An impassioned and prodigious climber, Moro has made over 30 major mountaineering expeditions, six of which were during the wintertime. His climbing resume boasts three Mt. Everest summits, and ascents of four other 8,000-meter peaks, including a January 2005 climb of Shishapangma that earned him the title of the only non-Polish mountaineer to achieve a high-altitude wintertime climb. The Italian Moro recently returned from a three-month wintertime expedition to Broad Peak (K3), although treacherous weather ultimately prevented him from reaching the summit. Put simply, Moro is one of most respected and renowned climbers in the world.
Moro’s lecture, 8,000 Meters of Life, is the story of Simone Moro’s long journey through his mountaineering and life-defining experiences in diverse, remote corners of the earth, narrated with the help of fading images and filmed sequences. The starting point is a tragic accident which occurred on Christmas Day 1997 when only he survived a horrific, 800-metre fall that claimed the lives of his fellow climbers, Anatoli Boukreev and Dimitri Sobolev.
Simone uses the images of his tragic, incredible experience of death and survival to recount his desire to get back on his feet again and to re-attain the peace of mind and will to live that were the driving forces behind so many inspiring adventures, friendships and meditations. This was the start of a new personal journey, through which Simone tries to explain how he managed not to be crushed by the tragedy in 1997 and how the ensuing expeditions and vertical experiences were not done by chance. His vertical pilgrimage took him to Kazakhstan and the first winter ascent of the 6400-metre Marble Wall, then to the Antarctic; Kilimanjaro; Pakistan and Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and K2; the Caucasus; and concluded with the world’s first winter ascent of Shisha Pangma in Tibet. For Moro, “climbing the world’s mountains is a way of discovering not only one’s own strengths and weaknesses, but also the cultures, peoples and problems of the world.”
Moro’s lecture will start at 19.00 pm on Saturday June 14th at the Cine Elaborigen in Cercedilla as part of the International Week of the Mountain Opening Ceremonies.
